The Hygiene-Institute is an architectural highlight of Brutalism in Berlin. Supported by US foreign minister John Foster Dulles and partly funded by the Benjamin Franklin Foundation it was a showcase project for the USA in the American sector of West-Berlin. Accordingly it was planned by Fehling+Gogel architects from 1966–74 in a consequently modern architectural approach with façades in raw concrete. In this it is comparable to the Unité d’Habitation by Le Corbusier which was finished in Berlin in context of the Inter Bau 1957.
