Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown by Charles Correa
Architect: Charles Correa Project: Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown Year: 2010 Location: Lisbon Function: Research Facility
The Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in the west of Lisbon functions as a biomedical research facility. The curviliear design of the three structures creates a free floating open space. The façades in grey stone have huge elliptic windows allowing views in the inner courtyard with lush tropical plantation. The pure architecture by Charles Correa and the multiple public plazas make it a unique place to visit in the capital of Portugal.
The generous emptiness of the open space is intriguing.
Simple forms and the pastel color palette make the public plaza by Charles Correa so photogenic. In the background a view of the river Tejo and the bay of Lisbon.
